Carl Sciberras is a 23 year old emerging dance artist from Western Sydney. Carl has a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications (Writing and Cultural Studies) from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the University of Technology Sydney respectively. He is currently the Education Coordinator at FORM Dance Projects and a Project Manager for Ausdance NSW.
Upon graduating from his degree in Western Australia, Carl receieved an ArtStart grant from the Australia Council to help establish a sustainable career in dance. Since receiving this grant, Carl has presented some of his work at the Home Brew Festival and has had his work selected for the Sydney Fringe Festival's Platform Shorts. He has also been working with fellow graduates Anya Mckee, Rosslyn Wythes and Victoria Bonnet on the presentation of Anya's work 'Fit to Shift', combining live dance with dance film installation.
Carl is also a founding member of the Dance Makers Collective, a collective of young independent dance artists committed to strengthening their practice and fostering a positive dance community where exchange of ideas and disciplines help build well-informed, connected and rich dance artists.
In January of 2010, Carl performed at the opening of the Perth International Arts Festival with Barcelona's La Fura dels Baus. Whilst at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Carl has worked with choreographers such as Sue Peacock, Dean Walsh, Felicity Bott, Xiaoxiong Zhang and Matthew Morris.
In June of 2011, Carl travelled to San Sebastian and Berlin where he worked closely with independent choreographer Mikel Aristegui (DV8, Sacha Waltz) on the development and presentation of a new work titled 'A Basque Man in Berlin' which premiered at the Sent el Patrimoni (Being the Heritage) Performing Arts Festival in Mallorca in July 2011.
Carl has been collaborating with visual artist Todd Fuller and composer Mitchell Mollison on a series of works that converge dance, original composition and visual art. Having studied dance, writing and cultural studies, Carl seeks to engage all of these fields of knowledge to create distinctive works that collaborate closely with other artists. These collaborative relationships have helped to establish the collective Flatline, of which Carl and Todd are Co-Founders and Directors. Flatline is a Sydney based interdisciplinary collective that brings together young emerging artists.
